Sometimes, it’s lonely at the top. If you have a CEO or Board, you can’t reveal your issues, as you are often “exposed.” And, it’s not appropriate to go down the pecking order with a lot of the topics that keep you up and night. Then, at a certain point, you don’t want to burden your mentor or sponsor’s goodwill and time. This is why I sought out Executive Coaching with Mendy. I found his calm and patient way of listening to be a prized asset to his style. He gave plenty of room for me to work through my problems, asked me deep and probing questions that got to the “next layer,” (the real issue) so we could tackle it. He always worked with me to find action items and resolutions to apply both long-term and immediately. Issues we worked on centered on navigating politics, standing up to microaggressions, and personal career path choices for my future. If you want a coach who isn’t afraid to tackle hard issues, he is the one!

Call it a cultural gap, impostor syndrome, or overthinking, I had recently begun to feel, at some level, that being my best at work was at odds with being my true self. And the idea of working with a career coach brought on terrifying visions of cringey word salads. Enter Mendy. With his fantastic, no-nonsense, calm, and engaging manner, he kept hitting the nail on the head. Over and over. Ouch. To be serious, I really appreciated Mendy’s detached observational style, which gave me space to figure out which changes were necessary, important and urgent. No word salad, just sympathetic honesty that helped separate the chaff from the substance. His focus on principles, best practices and ethics helped build the trust that I needed to have an honest conversation. I also developed simple techniques that I will be using at work. Hindsight is always 50/50 but truly, my doubts were silly. So if you have the chance, take it, and work with him!
